Truckers now in third group of COVID-19 vaccine deployment

The Centers for Disease Control has further defined the essential workers category, breaking it down into specific industries and pushing transportation workers and others to the third round of COVID-19 vaccine deployment.

In December 2020, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) expanded its recommendation regarding who will be the first to receive the novel coronavirus vaccine as well as who will subsequently receive it following Phase 1a.

FMCSA extends some COVID-19 relief exemptions to July

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has extended its pandemic-related emergency exemption through July 14.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has extended its pandemic-related emergency exemption by another month. This is the third extension of the order, which will now last through July 14.

In its latest extension, however, FMCSA condensed its definition of motor carriers and drivers providing direct assistance in support of relief efforts related to COVID-19. FMCSA has extended emergency relief for the following categories only:

Drivewyze expands rest area notifications nationwide

In addition to the three new states added, Drivewyze also provides temporary parking notifications in Pennsylvania and Florida.

While the evolving COVID-19 impact on state’s rest area operations has created confusion over which sites remain open for truckers, the need for drivers to find safe parking hasn’t subsided.

Virginia weigh stations temporarily converted to rest areas

Virginia’s waiver of registration and licensing requirements for motor carriers and a waiver of normal weight and width restriction in response to the pandemic COVID-19 emergency has been extended until May 19, 2020.

While all 13 motor carrier service centers (weigh stations) are temporarily closed until at least April 23, the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is offering weigh stations as additional rest areas to accommodate the increased number of commercial drivers working to deliver food and supplies in this critical time.

Coronavirus Recession Starts to Catch Up With Trucking Industry

While some segments of the trucking and e-commerce industries experienced a surge in business as the coronavirus pandemic reached U.S. shores, the economic malaise is starting to set in.

Analysts say consumers have stocked their pantries with most of what they needed as they started to comply with social distancing and shelter-in-place orders. A Morgan Stanley survey of more than 400 transportation carriers, shippers and brokers found that 100 percent were affected by the economic fallout of turning off large segments of the U.S. economy.

FMCSA extends exemption for truckers assisting with COVID-19 relief

FMCSA extended its emergency exemption for commercial drivers assisting with COVID-19 pandemic relief efforts through May 15 or until the national emergency has been terminated.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has extended its emergency exemption for truck and bus drivers assisting with COVID-19 pandemic relief efforts by another five weeks through May 15.
