Roadmaster CEO: Fleet shutdowns ‘cleanse’ the trucking industry

John Wilbur also says driver retention, not shortage, is where focus should be.


John Wilbur wants to make one thing perfectly clear. The CEO of Roadmaster Group, headquartered in Glendale, AZ, hates to see companies shut down and people lose their jobs. Having expressed that, however, he is as straight a shooter, figuratively, as most of the American soldiers who train with the ammunition his fleet supplies to military bases all over the country.

In a wide-ranging interview with Fleet Owner, Wilbur was asked about the spate of truck fleet closures the last year, and did not hold his fire.

Detention time continues to be a drag on drivers

Detention frequency and length have increased over the past four years, with negative impacts on driver productivity, regulatory compliance and compensation, according to new ATRI study.


Most drivers have run out of available hours-of-service (HOS) at a customer’s facility due to detention. And that detention, according to a new analysis by the
American Transportation Research Institute, had a significant impact on their ability to comply with HOS rules.

Uber Freight Hopes App Will Alleviate $1B Annual Trucker Losses

Uber Freight wants to tap the collective experiences of truckers to rate shippers and their loading docks for how quickly drivers can get in and out.

Delays at loading docks, also known as detention time, are a sore point for truckers. Collectively, detention time robs U.S. truckers of an estimated $1.1 billion to $1.3 billion in income annually, according to an audit by the Department of Transportation’s Office of Inspector General.
